hi ella.... i've only been there once and it was to Munich and throughout Bavaria but.... I had good luck with the Viator website for some of the tours. granted they outsource them but they do all the preliminary research and were great! they have English tours and I met some of the nicest people!! i did not speak any German but had no problem in the big cities. i even traveled down country into a more remote area and the people on the train were SO helpful AND they were only regular people, not train employees! hit the library for a german language CD -- i found as long as you try, you get a HUGE smile and an English (or broken English) reply!! although my friend who was living there had such a thick chicago accent, they would stop him from speaking German LOL

I'm a Marriott fan so.... now here's the thing -- hotels are NOT all like the standard US hotels or such so depending on where you are from.... twin beds are common place there so.... a single IS a single!!

make sure you try the local food -- go to a library and check out a German cookbook.... there are things you may want to "avoid". i recommend a weiswurst breakfast.... it's a special non smoked wonderful sausage!!

i am heading to frankfurt this september but haven't done all the research yet.... check out the lonely planet they usually have some great things to do!!

Try a travel agent who can make these arrangements. You must purchase travel insurance at the beginning of your arrangements--the volcano will erupt for the remainder of your life. No one has an unlimited amount of money or time, and although this does cost, it saves you the frustration of getting around on your own, trying to find your destination. Everything on a pre-arranged tour will be photogenic, not so if you must try to find your way on your own.

Parking a car will be very difficult and very costly. Public transportation is so much easier.

Online, look-up your city and then look up Day Tours. This can also be already arranged by your travel agent in advance. Do a lot of reading online, book store, library about your destination. Large and small tours will give you a tidbit of the history, of an attraction/historic site. Enough to make it interesting, not for testing purposes.

Day Tours--on your own--can be a lot of fun. You can book these day tours online. I have done that and found them to be nice experiences.

Do learn a few words of the language, so you will be perceived as polite. There is so much English spoken, you will not ever have any difficulty. A European will be able to understand several languages. So do whatever you can to be understood, don't worry about looking silly. You must remember that you are out of your comfort zone and that this is really a positive experience. So use words from several languages, if you must, to get your need across. That does work.

You must call your credit card company in advance, give them a brief itinerary of where you will be. They can and will deny your charges otherwise, because your spending pattern has changed.

Your bank can exchange USD for Euros. You cannot avoid the currency exchange charge.

Passport takes 6 weeks, may be more since this is high season for travel.

There is nothing wrong with you telling him you "think" your falling for him or you think you "might" like him and then quickly ask him what he thinks of you.

Easy as that. Just go for it, stop wasting this precious time. You will be glad you did

You can take the train as mentioned as on the whole (at least in the countries you mentioned) the travel is reliable, safe & easy. In some countries it is cheaper and others not especially if you buy on-the-spot tickets. However of course by car allows you more flexibility (and easier to carry a lot more luggage etc).

Also don't be put off by the distance. A month is more than enough time to follow this plan. ( My husband & I drive from the Netherlands to Bosnia twice a year in less than 2 days!)
So I will give it a go to answer your questions assuming you go by rental car as follows:

1. Yes you can get rental cars which allow you to drive in multiple countries. I rented one in the Netherlands and drove thru Denmark, Germany & Norway with it. Shop around for the best deals though - unlimited km's is the best especially if you want to do this trip. Also I would advise booking with one of the major companies (Hertz, Europcar, Avis etc) so you can be sure that if something goes wrong you can find a branch office easily in another country

Regarding Switzerland & the Schengen agreement, although signed up they have not yet implemented the rules yet (last plan was by Nov 2008) so you will probably have to get an additional visa for this (*depending which country you are from), but you can check this easily with the Swiss embassy in your country.

2 - There are no border controls/stops etc within the Schengen area. You will just see a sign by the roadside which informs you that you are now in country x, followed by another sign which details the speed limits for the different areas (normally anyway)

3. Probably best if you use the above link or someone else can help as I don't stay in Germany very often

4. You will need your local driving license and an International driving license depending on (a) which country you are from (EU or not) and which countries you travel in, as they all have their own rules. Also note that evenn with a rental car you will need to ensure you observe the requirements of each country with regard to equipment in the car. A really good site to read is the AA (Automobile Association) in the UK. Here is general info on driving in Europe http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/overseas/index.html and here is country specific info http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/overseas/countrybycountry.html

Finally, have a really good trip and a nice time!

For how long will you be travelling? You do realise the distances involved, don't you? It might be easier to take the train, even with your family. Trains are very good in mainland Europe. plus there are compartments if you want privacy. Depending on how long you will be in Europe, this might work out cheaper too.

For accommodation, you could try looking at www. hostelworld.com for clean, safe, and inexpensive accommodation - don't let the name fool you, they also do guesthouses and hotels.

Have a really great holiday.
